Rail journeys can be extremely tedious or a source of fascination and education.
When undertaken by ex-cabinet minister Michael Portillo they certainly fall into the latter category.
A surprising gem amongst the BBC2 schedule, this cult programme “Great British Railway Journeys” currently airs each weekday evening being transmitted at 6.30pm.
Island features this week
Each programme shows Michael Portillo following journeys of Victorians using the George Bradshaw Guide Book of 1840 with stop- overs in interesting places.
On Wednesday, 11th January he sets foot on the Island after a visit to Hampshire during a week long journey taking him from Royal Berkshire to Dorset.
