Isle of Wight residents urged to replace Radio Teleswitch meters before June 2025

Local Isle of Wight charity, The Footprint Trust, is urging residents on the Isle of Wight who are on an Economy 7 tariff and have a Radio Teleswitch (RTS) to take immediate action ahead of an important change to their electricity supply.

Radio Teleswitch

The signal that controls these meters will be switched off on 30th June 2025. Residents who rely on RTS for their off-peak electricity supply are advised to take steps now to replace their meters before the signal is disconnected.

If you are a customer with a Radio Teleswitch, your energy provider should be in contact with you to arrange for a meter replacement.

However, if you have not yet received communication from your provider, The Footprint Trust recommends getting in touch with them directly to begin the process.

Curtis: Please check with older residents or vulnerable neighbours
Bethan Curtis, Senior Energy Guide at The Footprint Trust, stated,

“This is an important event, and we don’t want anyone to miss this crucial opportunity.

“Please check with older residents or vulnerable neighbours who may have a Radio Teleswitch to ensure they have been contacted and are in the process of replacing their meter.”

She continued,

“Failure to replace your meter could result in losing access to off-peak rates or even losing heating and hot water.

“Don’t treat letters from your energy supplier as junk mail – it’s vital to have your meter changed.”

Take action now to avoid disruption to service
The Footprint Trust is urging residents to take action now to avoid disruptions to their service and to continue receiving the benefits of the Economy 7 tariff.

And don’t be afraid of having a smart meter installed there is NO reason to be worried. Don’t listen to the Tin Hat Brigade- you won’t die. If you haven’t already had it swapped out, get in touch with your energy supplier now as swapping out meters can’t happen overnight!

We have now had four aborted attempts by our supplier (EDF) to replace our RTS. The first two times the same man came, and left scratching his head, as it was rather more complicated than he’d been led to believe. The next two were both cancelled at the last moment – administrative error . . .

We are now waiting to hear about appointment number five!

We had similar problems with our previous supplier, but once we’d switched to Octopus they were incredibly reactive and sorted it very quickly.

Good luck getting a smart meter. Whilst there is one energy supplier that is willing the majority don’t want to know with a variety of excuses or hoops to jump through coupled with failed appointments. And that’s just with an ordinary meter swap. The government wants people to get a smart meter but the reality is that on the Island it’s not easy. My installer came from… Read more »

I did wonder if the ferries came into it somewhere – perhaps I ought to contact my MP?
We were with Octopus, but switched to a cheaper deal with EDF . . .
To put things in perspective, we’ve had no problems with them at all until this RTS/Smart meter fiasco!

My neighbour who wanted a smart meter was constantly told that “there were no appointments available in your area”. She still hasn’t got one after more than a year of trying. MP’s are useless, they believe the rubbish the government spouts.

My experience was very different.
My provider asked me if I’d like a smart meter and then very promptly provided it at the first opportunity.
Completely seamless and now I don’t need to worry about meter readings.

I still have my spinning disc meter. I think I’ll hang on it until all the fuss has died down.
