On Saturday 25th September, Nathan White, who attends St Catherine’s special school in Ventnor, became one of the youngest people to abseil down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth after only turning 14, the minimum age, last month.
Nathan, who has been a student for the past three years, along with his teacher Andy Gibbins, signed up for the challenge to help raise funds for the school, which is a registered charity that supports children and young people with severe and lifelong speech, language and communication needs.
Nerves of steel
Neither showed any sign of nerves prior to the descent, although Nathan’s mother who was waiting at the base of the tower was slightly anxious at the sight of her son dangling 100m up on a single rope.
Both thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and were first in line to sign up again for next year. Between the pair they have so far brought in over £500 for the charity.
