The subject of the debate was announced today (Thursday) and will appear on the printed order paper tomorrow morning.
The debate will take place in the Chamber of the House of Commons at the end of other scheduled business on Monday 13th October, most probably at 10pm.
The Island’s MP will be called to speak and a Minister will reply. Although he will not be able to speak again after the Minister, Mr Turner will be able to intervene during the Minister’s speech if there are points he wishes to respond to and if he or she allows it (known as ‘giving way’).
There will be no vote following the debate, but such ‘adjournment debates’ are a well established way of getting issues raised publicly with Ministers and getting their response ‘on the record’.
Mr Turner said:
“I am pleased to have secured this debate and have already spoken informally with the new Transport Minister responsible for Maritime Issues, John Hayes MP. I applied for the debate because many people have been raising a range of issues with me about our ferry services over recent months. I will be reviewing their communications before the debate.
“Over the next few weeks I shall also be inviting input from the ferry user groups, the people behind the Better Ferry Campaign, the organisers of the ‘Are Wightlink the Right Link’ Facebook page, and the ferry companies themselves before finalising my speech. I will have 15 minutes to speak and the Minister the same amount of time to respond.”
