Deb Gardiner Chair of Isle of Wight Labour Party shares this tribute to Labour Candidate, Del Singh. Ed
Distressing news came from Afghanistan at the end of last week as we heard that Del Singh one of Labour’s Candidates for the Isle of Wight in the Euro Elections had died in the bombing of a Kabul Restaurant.
Chair of the Isle of Wight Labour Party, Deborah Gardiner said,
“Many Labour Party members met Del either individually during his canvassing visits or at the selection meetings. We were particularly struck by his passion and commitment to make a difference, and that was what he was doing in Kabul – working for peace.
“In a short period he had built a lot of respect from amongst Island party members who he had hoped to represent in the European Parliament. His enthusiasm, thoughtfulness and passion for change was particularly striking . Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”
Southampton resident
Del, who was from Southampton, worked as an International Development Specialist and had managed EU and UN projects in post-conflict countries, including Afghanistan, Palestine, Libya and Sierra Leone.
MEP candidate Anneliese Dodds said:
“Del was a very generous, warm-hearted man who was passionate about ending injustice and unfairness. Despite his life being appallingly cut short at a comparatively young age, Del achieved a huge amount, both in Britain and overseas.
“I still can’t quite believe that such a positive, open person has lost his life in this way. Both British and European politics have suffered a heavy loss. I personally have lost a funny, kind and very bright colleague and friend.”
Fellow MEP candidate John Howarth said:
“Del was a lovely man and a good man. His kindness, generosity and genuine bravery will not be forgotten.
“I know how proud Del’s family were of him. They have lost a son, as has the Labour family. None of us can say anything to console or compensate their loss, words are inadequate but our thoughts are with them.”
