Whilst engrossed in the TV coverage of the resignation of Labour leader Gordon Brown and the introduction of Conservative leader David Cameron as Prime Minister to the UK, an email dropped into our inbox from Local Labour Councillor, Geoff Lumley.
Anticipating dissatisfaction amongst Liberal Democrats on the Island that their leader has joined forces with the Conservative party, he sends out this appeal to all Island Lib Dems.
“Having promoted the Liberal Democrats as a progressive and radical alternative to the Tories on the Island for the last 36 years, I am sure there will be many local LibDems wondering today what it has all been about, as their party leader drags them into this unprincipled alliance.
“I would say to them all – the Morris Bartons, the Shirley Smarts, the Bob Blezzards, the Reg Barrys, even the Jill Warehams, and more importantly the next generation – the game is up for your party.
“Come and join us and help us beat the Lib-servatives at future Island elections. And please do not let us see you assimilated into the Tory benches at the next Full Council.”
