If you’re considering becoming a Town, Parish or Community councillor this year, IWALC (The Isle of Wight Association of Local Councils) have a training schedule that starts this coming June to help you start your journey.
Free training
All training will be held at the Riverside Centre in Newport in the evening, which offers accessible facilities. Training is free to all member councillors and staff, (there is a fee per delegate to nonmember councils). Attending in person gives people the opportunity to meet other councillors and make new connections. a
In person or via Zoom
IWALC now offers hybrid meetings, so if you are unable to attend in person then you can remote in online via Zoom. We also send out training notes.
The schedule starts in June with;
- 25th June – New Councillor training
- 30th July – Ethics in Leadership
- 24th September – Planning
- 29th October – Finances
- 26th November – GDPR

The latest IWALC Newsletter is a bumper issue this month, with a special feature on Community Orchards and allotments. There is information available in the newsletter about membership of NALC networks (National Association of Local Councils) to give support to specific communities and to increase the diversity we have in our councils.
IWALC wishes prospective councillors well in their election campaign and assurances that the training available will help them in their new Community roles.
