The Isle of Wight Jazz Weekend, a pinnacle in the South Coast’s music calendar, is making its highly anticipated return to Newport this week (14th-17th September 2023).
Showcasing the best of UK Jazz
Designed to celebrate the UK’s vibrant jazz scene, the festival also makes a point of shining a light on local talent, ensuring a harmonious blend that promises an auditory feast for attendees.
Having begun modestly in 2012, the Isle of Wight Jazz Weekend has since evolved into a grand four-day celebration, held in high esteem on the national jazz calendar.
Its rapid growth over the years is testament to the rising popularity of jazz, not just on the Isle of Wight, but across the UK and further afield.
A line-up to remember
This year, the roster is replete with stellar names from the jazz world. Notably, the festival will feature Georgia Mancio, an award-winning vocalist, the eminent jazz guitarist Jim Mullen, and the much-revered Syd Lawrence Orchestra.
Adding to this eclectic mix are performances from the multi-talented Australian harpist and vocalist Tara Minton and her trio, a homage to clarinetist Benny Goodman, and sets from bands spearheaded by UK jazz icons Alan Barnes, Simon Spillett, and Mark Nightingale.
Kicking off the event will be Island native, gypsy jazz guitarist, Sol Grimshaw, backed by his five-piece London ensemble.
This opening act is anticipated to lay down the overarching mood for the weekend: a dynamic fusion of time-honoured and contemporary jazz.
Celebration of local and global talent
As the festival unfolds, Newport will also echo with the sounds of Island-based musicians at various venues.
This emphasis on local talent is a poignant reminder of the festival’s dual mission: celebrating global jazz greats while championing local artists.
The rich tapestry of classical and contemporary jazz on offer ensures the Isle of Wight Jazz Weekend remains an unmissable event for jazz connoisseurs.
A weekend not to be missed
Regardless of whether you’re a long-time jazz enthusiast or a budding admirer of the genre, this festival promises an inclusive experience. It’s an invitation to immerse oneself in a world of captivating rhythms and performances that pay tribute to jazz’s storied legacy.
