Some months ago when Andrew Turner MP was being bullied and ridiculed by some of his own party officials; I did come to his defence. However, since that time things have moved on, things have changed and not for the better. I do feel that he [AT] is now taking the electorate for granted. He should participate fully in this election, stop hiding and face his critics.… Read more »

You are right, Don. The stoic approach has turned to scepticism and people are getting unhappy about him.I found it easy to feel sorry for him but now I’m getting annoyed!

Well that was three hours of my life I will not get back. Not one candidate came across or even hinted that they knew what was happening which suggests, to me, that they did not have a single solution or an understanding of the very real problems we face as an Island. Rambling, Bumbling, Unnecessary Aggression, stupid and inane point scoring were just a few observations of… Read more »

@Peaceful_life How long have you got? None of the so called candidates seemed capable of joining up the dots. The many and varied problems faced by the Island and Islanders were not recognized or fully appreciated. The Island is so fragmented and the various fragments are defensive, protective and divisive. I personally do not like any of the candidates but sadly one will be elected and the… Read more »

I’m not entirely following you, do you mean in terms of peoples different opinions and ideologies?

What kind of candidate would you like?….please don’t say one that can join all the dots, without explaining what those dots are.

Thanks

@ peaceful_life and Milly My preferred candidate would have presence, the ability to really listen, have courage, empathy, ability and passion. They would be able to communicate at all levels and engage with ordinary people (not just at election time) Last nights event was a real opportunity to showcase their skills, passion, etc. Instead we had displays of bad temper and the complete inability to debate without… Read more »

Nice to see “poor Mr Turner” up and about attacking the poor and benefit claimants. Has he really suddenly took an interest in education? “Question Austerity” Mr Stephens, right on the button. Well said. “Small parties now have a voice, enhancing democracy”, Ian seems to be really astute on the way things are changing in this election. Milly – I explained why our NHS is already privatised, but I guess the detail cannot make a tweet. It got a big round of applause from the chap who asked the question!

Hopefully they’ll be a podcast in the morning on the IWRadio site so you can listen to it and make up your own mind.

It certainly was very much livelier than the other hustings!

@vix Getting applause from a questioner quite probably means that s/she was a supporter of yours from the off rather than a spontaneous convert? I got the impression that most people there/asking questions weren’t exactly neutral observers. *wonders if I should put some jolly exclamation marks in here*? *decides against*

ewald, The flooding was cause because houses were built on the flood plain, resulting in large areas of land draining directly into water courses. The effect was made worse but to straightening of rivers and lack of maintenance of ditches. It had nothing to do with global warming. I fully agree climate change is an issue and needs addressing, but don’t make claims that cannot be properly… Read more »

@BB.

Perhaps it had something to do with the largest amount of rainfall in recorded history. Yes, negative land management methods only serve to exacerbate the situation, but the overall driving factor was/is heat induced increase in precipitation levels bringing about erratic climate fluctuation.

It sure is an issue.

PL, before replying let me say, I am not suggesting for one second that the climate isn’t getting warmer, and that man’s activities are not having a negative impact. However, 2014 was the 4th highest rainfall in the UK since 1910, and within the 20th wettest years since 1766. Some years are wetter than other. Whilst 2014 was high it was not exceptionally so. Bad land management… Read more »

@yjciow.

Vix was being politely over cautious.

Science has many ways of verifying and it has verified to the point that we already know that the climate has already changed, the question now is how we best adapt.

I’ve been a Trades Unionist all my life and I always voted Labour.I have given up on Labour and don’t vote for them anymore.Even so I don’t think Stewart is arrogant, that is wrong.As far as the Greens are concerned, they don’t have any connection with the Unions but Ian Stephens does.

So I will be voting for Ian Stephens, the Independent, in this election.

If Ian Stephens has connections with the unions then it must be at some top secret level as as far as I can see (as an active union member. There are trade unionists campaigning across the country for Labour candidates and that includes here for Stewart Blackmore. Active members of UNISON, UNITE, CWU, NUT, GMB, USDAW and other trade unions are all working on Stewarts’s campaign. He… Read more »

Given the vicious anti-trade union legislation planned by the Tories, it is disappointing to see any trade unionist looking to support any candidate other than Stewart Blackmore for Island MP. Only Labour can form a Government strong enough to stop the Tories, defend trade unions and protect the members they represent.

Questions I would have wanted to put was to Mr Turner:

What will be the composition of your office staff if you are successful in this forthcoming election? Have you had a clear out? Is there nothing left for Private Eye to re-erect?
