Cowes is all set to welcome veterans and members of the public as the Town Council hosts a special event to celebrate 80 years since World War II officially ended in Europe (VE Day).
The VE Day 80 celebrations, on Thursday 8th May, will begin with a parade of local cadets through the town, led by the Vectis Corps of Drums marching band.
The parade will set off from Shooters Hill at 7pm and will proceed through the town to The Parade, where local veterans will be invited to a tea party with entertainment on The Bandstand from Vectis Corps of Drums and singing duo Double Take. Veterans will be served with the official Women’s Institute VE Day 2025 Orange and Ginger Cake, made by Cowes WI.
Cowes Beacon lighting
At 9.30pm, the town will be part of a global initiative when over one thousand beacons will be lit across the UK, Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories to signify the light that emerged from the darkness of war.
The Cowes Beacon lighting will be part of the celebrations on The Parade.
Deputy Lord-Lieutenant, Colonel Snagge OBE, will light the beacon of peace on The Parade, before reading the Nation’s Tribute. All those present will then be invited to join in and sing ‘I Vow To Thee My Country’.
Cowes is steeped in World War II history
A spokesperson for Cowes Town Council said,
“The Town Council would like to thank all those who have helped to make this special anniversary event possible. Cowes is steeped in World War II history – from the role of ORP Błyskawica in defending the town during the May 1942 Blitz to the role of JS White in supplying ships to the Royal Navy.
“It is only right that the town plays its full part in remembering our past, honouring our heroes and celebrating the end of the Second World War in Europe.
“Special thanks go to Colonel Snagge OBE DL, Cowes WI, Blind Tiger and local scouts for giving up their time to help support our event.
“All are welcome to come along and celebrate with us as we commemorate all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.”
