CycleWight the cycling advocacy group is joining the organisers of the national Cycle to Work Day, Cyclescheme, in encouraging people to cycle to work on Wednesday 14th September 2016.
Cyclists’ breakfast
As part of this national event CycleWight, with the support of the Chamber of Commerce, are holding a cyclists’ breakfast in Newport at the corner of Sea Street and Quay Street on the 14th September from 6.30am to 9am.
There will be a continental breakfast for anyone who arrives on a bike. Last year’s event saw nearly a 100 people take part.
CycleWight committee member Alec Lawson said,
“Even though people may not be able to make it to Newport it would be great if people joined in to be part of this national event.
“People can register to pledge the distance cycled. Last year nearly half a million miles were ridden.”
Support from employers
CycleWight hope as many employers as possible will support the event by providing a breakfast for any of their employees who ride into work next Wednesday.
The Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce have been granted some funding to encourage people to get to work in a more sustainable way and are keen to support the local and national event. They recently commissioned an article for their magazine from CycleWight about cycle commuting on the Island.
Tim Thorne of CycleWight highlighted the fact that it is proven that people who ride to work statistically take fewer days off sick per year – even more reason to encourage cycling.
