As part of the West Wight Triathlon, once again the organisers teamed up with the Ellen MacArthur Trust to help raise awareness of the work of the Trust and to raise funds.
Set up by Dame Ellen MacArthur in 2003 the Trust takes young people aged between 8-18 sailing to help them regain their confidence, on their way to recovery from cancer, leukaemia and other serious illness.
Julian Hollaway, from Ewhurst in Surrey, completed the last of three triathlons this year at Sundays West Wight event. All the money raised across his three triathlons will go to the The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust in memory of Julian’s son Jake.
Family close to Cancer Charity
The Trust is a charity very close to Julian and his family, five years ago Julian’s son, Jake who was battling with a brain tumour, was unable to join one of the charity’s regular four day sailing trips. So, the Island based charity arranged a one off sailing day for the whole family.
Sadly, Jake lost his battle, and family and friends rallied around to raise money in his name, which was donated to the Trust. “I can’t begin to explain how precious that day was to us all, and we cannot thank The Trust enough for giving us those precious memories with Jake. This is an amazing charity and we hope they continue their work with children and young adults all over the UK, because they really do make a difference to their lives,” Julian Holloway.
Three triahtlons
Julian decided to complete three Triathlons in 2010, Upton On Severn, Windsor and ending up with West Wight raising money for The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust in Jake’s memory.
“It seemed fitting that the final event I did this year was on the Island where The Trust is based. My daughter LucyAnna joined me at the event and it was a fantastic atmosphere for everyone involved. The West Wight triathlon was a great way to round off the events and raise some money for this fantastic charity. Hopefully the final total will enable two young people to join the Trust in 2011”.
Julian, who had given himself a £1,000 sponsorship target, is now expecting to break the £2,000 mark. You can donate money to his JustGivingpage
