I was reminded of my late uncle today when reading in the County Press about six Ventnor teenagers who took part in a karate tournament in Portsmouth and walked away victorious.
He was either 5th or 8th dan and used to teach my younger brother and a couple of family friends the art of karate. He was a very patient and motivational teacher and sadly missed.
But back to the kids …. Natalia Deacon, 15, Aaron Parsons, 15, Ayden Sibley, 15, Josh Pike, 13, Liam Deacon, 11, and Steven Deacon, 11, who are all from Ventnor, make up Team Kara which was taking part in the tournament for the first time.
Peter Deacon, who is himself a 5th Dan and the champ’s instructor said:
“They all train extremely hard week in, week out and deserve the success the day brought. It’s 14 years since Ventnor entered into competition with my brother Les and myself winning the trophies. It’s great to see our students and kids on the mat performing like we did.”
In the words of Mr Miyagi … “Man who catch fly with chopsticks accomplish anything.”
Well done to you all – great work.
