Kathryn and Peter Tickell with Amy Thatcher

Quay Arts proudly host special guest Kathryn Tickell in the Anthony Minghella Theatre on Tue 26 Mar at 8pm.

Kathryn and Peter Tickell with Amy ThatcherKathryn needs no introduction as the foremost exponent of the Northumbrian pipes.

Expect an evening of evocative airs and toe-tapping dance tunes, interspersed with Kathryn’s inimitable introductions.

The world’s most widely acknowledged icon of Northumbrian music joins forces with family fiddle talent, Peter Tickell to produce music of an electrifying energy, vitality and virtuosity.

Kathryn and Peter’s technical prowess is only part of the appeal: more special than that is the soul and the depth of their interpretations.

Whether they are retrieving little-known classics of a rural tradition or introducing their latest compositions, they perform with conviction and their absolute commitment is immediately apparent.

Kathryn needs no introduction as the foremost exponent of the Northumbrian pipes, playing with Sting, The Chieftains, The Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Evelyn Glennie, Andy Sheppard and many others as well as releasing 14 of her own albums.

As a fiddler she learned in the traditional way, from first-hand interaction with old shepherd musicians from outlying hill farms.

Younger brother Peter was brought up to be equally adept at classical violin and traditional fiddle playing, and has won all the Northumbrian and Border fiddle competitions. As well as touring with Kathryn’s band he is a recent recruit to the Peatbog Faeries’ line up.

On this occasion they are teamed with rising star Amy Thatcher, a recent graduate of Newcastle University’s folk degree course, who started her career in the Fosbrooks clog dance group, doubling on accordion and fiddle.

“Their enthusiasm for the music is contagious. As they celebrated the tunes they had written together, a profound familial connection seemed to glimmer between them.” Celtic Connections

“Close your eyes and you’re stood on Hadrian’s Wall with the rain coming at you hard and horizontal, or looking out across a raging sea at Lindisfarne, or holed up in the Crown & Anchor after the tides come in; Tickell manages to incorporate the wildness of Northumberland into her music in a way which shuns nostalgia.” Fly Global Music

“Musically breathtaking and hugely entertaining.” OneNorthEast

“To say that Tickell plays the pipes is like saying that Shakespeare was a bit of a writer.” Living Tradition
