Just two weeks since Island Line trains came back into service – following damage to the line during the period of heavy flooding at the end of last year – a landslip near Sandown has caused the line to close again earlier today.
Happily, the service was restored late this afternoon and it’s now running again.
Problems earlier
The landslip was reported to have occurred near Sandown, resulting in trains not being able to run between Ryde St Johns Road and Shanklin.
South West Trains told OnTheWight:
We had a landslip this morning in the Sandown area. The landslide stopped about 20 feet from the railway, so this won’t caused much disruption to our services.
However, some trees have been left hanging on the railway line as a result of the movement of soil.
We have a team currently cutting back the trees and we will be able to run services as soon as this work is complete.
Bus service was arranged
A bus replacement service was arranged. It operated between Ryde St Johns Road and Shanklin stations, extending journey times by up to 30 minutes. Now the train is running, this is no longer needed.
Thanks to OnTheWight reader Janet Bain for letting us know about this.
