The former home of an Isle of Wight business — which has moved to a bigger store — could be turned into flats.
One of Tile Superstores shops, on Crocker Street in the heart of Newport, could be demolished to make way for eight flats, ranging in size from a studio apartment to two-bed flats.
New premises
The business, which opened in 1985 and also has a store in Lake, has been based at Crocker Street since 2000.
After 23 years, it has now moved to Dodnor Industrial Estate to a larger, more accessible showroom.
Enhance area with housing
In documents submitted to the Isle of Wight council on behalf of Tile Superstores, agents Modh Design says the former building is a ‘tired and poor quality unit’.
It is proposing it is replaced by the housing block, to enhance the character of the area.
It says the development would significantly improve the existing site.
Langton Mews
The apartments, proposed to be called Langton Mews, could be arranged over three floors with a secure entryway.
The diverse range of flats has been designed as such, the planning agents say, to widen the market reach and meet the housing needs of Islanders.
Brownfield site
If it were approved, the development would change the brownfield site’s use, next to the Crocker Street Garage, from commercial to residential.
The surrounding area, the planning agents say, is a dense, primarily residential area with some businesses located nearby.
Outside space
A private courtyard is also proposed as part of the development so residents can access a private outdoor space.
Tall shrubs and trees could be planted around the courtyard, plans suggest,to act as a privacy screen to neighbouring properties on St James Street.
