Figures published by the Office for National Statistics show that 2,565 people in the Isle of Wight area were claiming ‘out of work benefits’ (wording defined by ONS) during August 2022 – these figures also include Universal Credit figures.
That’s a rise of 5 since July 2022, when there were 2,560 claimants, and a fall of 1,140 from August 2021 (3,705 JSA claimants).
Breakdown of claimants
Of those claiming in August 2022:
- 1,525 were male
- 1,040 were female
- 5 were 16-17
- 385 were aged 18 To 24
- 230 were aged 18 To 21
- 1,475 were aged 25 To 49
- 700 were aged 50+
That means 3.2% of the resident population of area aged 16-64 is claiming out of work benefits – 0.3% more than the rest of the South East (2.9%), and 0.5% less than the whole of the UK (3.7%).
