A former Sandown High School student has become a world champion after winning her event at the 2016 TAGB (Taekwondo Association of Great Britain) World Championships over the weekend of 16th-17th July, which took place in Birmingham.

Gold and Silver medals
Lauren Macaulay won gold in the ladies light heavy red belt continuous sparring to take the title, and also gained a silver medal in the tag team event.

In sparring the aim is to kick the head for three points, kick the mid section for two and punch the mid section or head for a single point.

To become world champion, Macaulay won her semi-final and final, where each fight was two rounds of two minutes.

After her solo win, the 28-year-old formed part of the three-person tag team which narrowly missed out on gold to a team made up of fighters from Argentina and Scotland.

British champion
Macaulay is currently the British champion after victory in 2015 and won three silver medals in point stop sparring, continuous sparring and patterns at the ITF (International Taekwondo Federation) world championships in Italy last year.

She is now working towards black belt grading in 2017 as she continues to train in Bristol with Russ Martin.
