Letter: Could ‘Bonk for Britain’ become the government’s next push amid falling birthrates?

OnTheWight always welcomes a Letter to the Editor to share with our readers – unsurprisingly they don’t always reflect the views of this publication. If you have something you’d like to share, get in touch and of course, your considered comments are welcome below.

This from Hans Bromwich from Cowes. Ed

To sustain a population you require a birthrate of 2.1 children per woman.

At present the birthrate is declining across the world. South Korea has the lowest rate at 0.78, China is 1.45. The birthrate in the UK has been steadily falling now for a number of years, and in Russia it’s been reported that the State is encouraging workers to have sex during lunch and break times in an attempt to boost their birthrate.

Throughout history, when civilisations have collapsed, it has always followed a period of prosperity after which the birthrate drops dramatically.

A strain on the economy and society
With a growing elderly population and declining younger generation it is not difficult to understand the strain this puts on the economy and society.

There will not be enough people in work paying taxes to finance State Pensions, let alone pay for the growing demand on our NHS and Care sector.

Assisted Dying Bill
Little wonder the winter fuel allowance has been withdrawn, and the Assisted Dying Bill is being speedily progressed through Parliament. The more elderly who die, rather than becoming a financial and health burden in old age, the better for society.

That’s the harsh reality of where we are, and probably goes some way to explain some of the decision making currently going on in Government.

‘Bonk For Britain’
I guess it’s only a matter of time before we have a Downing Street press announcement on the issue, with the three word slogan on the lectern saying, ‘Bonk For Britain’.

I know what you are thinking, where’s Boris Johnson when you need him? Probably still hiding in that fridge.
