Letter: Free public transport to help combat global warming suggested by transport expert

News OnTheWight always welcomes a Letter to the Editor to share with our readers – unsurprisingly they don’t always reflect the views of this publication. If you have something you’d like to share, get in touch and of course, your considered comments are welcome below.

This from Rodney Archer, who has over thirty years’ experience as a rail and road operator and is an executive member of Isle of Wight Bus and Rail Users Group. Ed

Mankind is now having to accept that Global Warming, brought about by the uncontrolled burning of fossil fuels, is having such a catastrophic effect on the climate.

Doomsday scientists have already warned that if in the next decade the recent 1.5% increase in climate warming increases to 2% this could make a further 25% of the world un-inhabitable, with such a devastating effect on us all — which really means we are in World War Three!

We know that a key factor in the burning of fossil fuels is the uncontrolled growth and usage of passenger cars — I am not an anti-car man, in fact quite the opposite.

Free public transport
One of the measures that is now rapidly gaining ground around the world is that Public Transport should be free at point of use and it is very interesting to note that the country of Luxembourg in 2020 made this courageous step of doing just that — and it would appear they are already making plans to dramatically increase bus, train and tram services throughout the country.

Same idea on the Island?
Therefore, I would like to ask – Could not the Isle of Wight propose such a scheme? Obviously there would need to be a proper cost/benefit exercise, but the question now is how could we get the proposal off the ground?

What do readers of News OnTheWight feel about this proposal?
