Road closed sign

Letter: Is the road closure really necessary?

OnTheWight always welcomes a Letter to the Editor to share with our readers – unsurprisingly they don’t always reflect the views of this publication. If you have something you’d like to share, get in touch and of course, your considered comments are welcome below.

This from Philip Hawkins, St Lawrence. Ed

Are Island Roads mad? Answers to that one on the back of a postage stamp, please!

Yesterday (Thursday), Undercliff Drive was closed near the Botanic Gardens, meaning that the only access to St Lawrence was via St Lawrence Shute.

The Shute has a width limit of 6′ 6″, and a proven record of being impassable to long vehicles. Quite how anything larger than a Transit van was supposed to get to the village is a mystery?

Closed for heavy vehicle parking
What were they doing to Undercliff Drive to require its closure? NOTHING! Nothing at all.

They were re-surfacing Steephill Court Road, and using the main road as a convenient place to park their heavy equipment when not in use . . .

It remains to be seen whether the same idiocy is repeated today?
