Ping and Pong

Letter: Pensioner caught in drop kerb ping-pong between the council and Island Roads

We always welcome a Letter to the Editor to share with our readers. If you have something you’d like to share, get in touch. This in from Newport resident, Don Smith. Ed

I have been contacting Island Roads and the Isle of Wight Council for over twelve months; requesting to have ONE high kerb lowered, so as to allow me to get out of the Close where I live and visit Newport.

Over twelve months ago I purchased a mobility scooter to get me out and about; I am disabled and can’t walk very far. Unfortunately the kerbs in Winchester Close, Newport are far too high for me to get out of the Close.

I requested help from the council. They referred me to Island Roads. My only way to the town is via Linden Road/Castle Road having to manoeuvre the traffic at these junctions. I am not fit enough to use public transport.

Sympathy from on high
I have written to my local councillor on three occasions, my MP, at least four times, the Chief Constable of Hampshire, and the Secretary of State for Transport. All replied to me; all were sympathetic. However, nothing has been done. I am reluctant to use the scooter because of the potential dangers to myself and others.

PS: Over the past few weeks I have contacted Island Roads and the Isle of Wight Council many times. Each one tells me to contact the other; to and fro I go. Each telling me they will get back to me, neither do.

All I seek is access to Newport.
