Letter: The disparity between the two types of Public Servants

We always welcome a Letter to the Editor to share with our readers – unsurprisingly they don’t always reflect the views of this publication. If you have something you’d like to share, get in touch and of course, your considered comments are welcome below. This from Peter Geach from East Cowes Ed

There are clearly two groups of Public Servant. The first; Teachers, Nurses, Civil Servants including County Hall, Firemen; the list goes on. And the second, MPs.

MPs have inflation-proofed expenses which include housing, food, travel costs, a gold plated pension and severance deal and so on. It was the MPs who collectively sleep walked us into the Banking crisis, caused by the rich and being paid for by the poor.

Smoke and mirrors
They recently had an 11% rise! But in these austere times with their feather bedding they could easily have forgone this raise until the trumpeted recovery is here. Haven’t seen much evidence of that myself. I think its mostly ‘smoke and mirrors’!

In comparison the Teachers, Nurses etc. of the first group have had wages frozen for two years, with now a paltry 1% on offer. Their Pension entitlements have been cut back, they have to work longer.

If you do a job that needs manual strength and dexterity, there comes an age where, physically you cant go on. And I would say 65 is about the absolute limit here. If you have a relatively stress free job, you can go on longer. How long you can work depends on that individuals physical condition, and that should take into account the effect of long journeys to and from work.

It’s an Equitable life
I’m always amused when Ministers stand at the dispatch box and talk about ‘hard working people’. There hardest job is not falling over as they come out of the bar! Oh yes and the drinks are also ‘on us’!

Interestingly when Lawyers ‘downed tools’ recently about their fees, very little was said. Not so the Public Servants strike! It’s an Equitable life!
