Letter: Safety measures on dangerous corner need improving

We always welcome a Letter to the Editor to share with our readers – unsurprisingly they don’t always reflect the views of this publication. If you have something you’d like to share, get in touch and of course, your considered comments are welcome below. This from Margaret Sheridan-Wallis from Shanklin. Ed

We live in Clarence Gardens in Shanklin, and have become increasingly concerned with near-misses, as cars driving too fast down Arthur’s Hill don’t expect to see cars emerging from Clarence Gardens.

There is no indication of the imminent hazardous corner. However, there is a sign just before the corner which warns of a (non-existent) speed camera. Why isn’t there a warning sign for the dodgy corner?

The speed camera sign is ill-placed, because firstly, if it is heeded at all, it distracts the driver from the impending dangerous corner that is just a few feet ahead and secondly, there is no speed camera anyhow! The sign is virtually AT the corner and therefore it isn’t seen until the speeding car has passed the brow of the hill – which is too late to moderate speed and anticipate an emerging car, if the sign is heeded at all.

For some reason, the speeding drivers look annoyed that they suddenly have to slam on brakes for an emerging vehicle, oblivious to the fact that they are over-limit!

We would hate to see any worse accidents than the current emergency stops and the shattered confidence or side lights, especially as the local population is not in the prime of life. I believe that urgent action is required, for everybody’s safety and peace of mind.
