We’re always happy to share a ‘Letter To The Editor’ with our readers. We particularly like those from ‘tongue-in-cheek’ VB reader, Ron Chonner. Ed
Dear Sal and Simon,
I am writing to the VentnorBlog in hope that one of your readers can either confirm or deny a persistent rumour to the effect that Tesco are planning to take over the government of the Island.
This idea stems apparently from two sources. One, that government should become more localised (Cameron’s ‘Big Government’) and two, that as many services as possible should become privatised.
Tesco Down?
If their bid is successful Tesco – as I understand it – plan a mega- multi- supermarket to be established on land they have already earmarked on Bembridge Down adjacent to the fort.
This structure, possibly multi-storey, with escalators to all floors and a roof top heli-pad, will have room for all the local government departments, alongside the proposed opticians, dentists and medical centre.
No interference to the present electoral arrangements is envisaged but, as Tesco are keen to point out, their comprehensive legal and financial expertise will be readily available, in store, and should prove invaluable in preventing the kind of nonsensical decisions with which we are all too familiar at present.
Vouchers for voting
Further, they propose as a valuable incentive, to award money-off vouchers to any customer voting in person, as well as a small range of independent shops available for rent.
I must emphasise that I have no certain proof of any of the above, nor that the interim title for the scheme is ‘Tesco Town’, or ‘Tesco City’, or indeed what implications one might draw from this.
I believe however that the story is of sufficient weight to merit further investigation
Yours sincerely, Ron Chonner
