We always welcome a Letter to the Editor, this one from VB reader, Peter Milne, with some important information about updating your driving licence photograph. Ed
Whilst reading the March 2012 issue of Disabled Motoring UK I came across this very interesting article on page eight which I believe may be of interest to your readers.
The photograph on your driving licence needs to be updated every ten years at a cost of £20, if you fail to update your photograph you can face a £1,000 fine. You are usually sent a reminder when your licence needs updating, but do check the expiry date periodically.
Following a Freedom of Information request, Sainsbury’s Car Insurance has discovered that there are over 1.6 million drivers in the UK that risk the fine because their licence has an expired photograph. According to the statistics 41% of drivers are not fully aware of the consequences of having an expired photograph, and that many are deterred because of the £20 cost as they feel they have already paid enough for their licence.
If you still have an old style paper licence you do not have to worry about updating your licence every ten years. Parliament has given powers to recall these old style paper licences so that secure photo card licences will be held by more people, but no date has been set for this as yet.
