Letter: Young Lives vs Cancer thanks Isle of Wight community for supporting young cancer patients

OnTheWight always welcomes a Letter to the Editor to share with our readers – unsurprisingly they don’t always reflect the views of this publication. If you have something you’d like to share, get in touch and of course, your considered comments are welcome below.

This from Liz Blunt, Senior Fundraising Engagement Manager at Young Lives vs Cancer. Ed

This winter, children and young people with cancer and their families will be travelling miles from home to get to hospital for treatment.

Young Lives vs Cancer’s Homes from Home around the UK help the whole family to stay together, nearby to their child’s treatment.

More than a free place to stay
Our Home from Home Jean’s House is close by to Southampton General Hospital which is the nearest Principal Treatment Centre for children and young people with cancer from the Isle of Wight.

For families, a Home from Home is more than a free place to stay. It’s a place that feels like home. It means families can spend precious time together this winter, whether that’s for a home-cooked meal or a mug of hot chocolate with a bedtime story.

Other ways you can help
As well as donating towards our winter appeal there are other ways the community from the Isle of Wight can support Young Lives vs Cancer’s vital work this Christmas.

They can visit our online shop to buy this year’s Christmas cards, festive pin badges or gorgeous teddy bears.

Personal thanks to our supporters
I’d like to say a personal thank you to everyone in the community who has supported Young Lives vs Cancer this year. This help and generosity means Young Lives vs Cancer can continue to be there for more children and young people from the Island facing cancer.

We only have our fantastic team: Young Lives vs Cancer specialist social workers, based at Southampton Hospital, Jean’s House and its staff, thanks to those who have supported us.

Get involved
If anyone would like to get involved and support Young Lives vs Cancer in the coming year, please do get in touch – we’ve got lots of volunteering and fundraising opportunities in the local area.

Wishing you and your readers good health and happiness for 2025.
