Many thanks to VentnorBlog reader Luigi Forrester, who sent in this review of Wednesday’s night’s CP/Platform One Live/Wired battle. If you have something to say about any event you go to, feel free to share it with our readers by getting in touch. Ed
The IWCP Live/Wired event was held Wednesday evening at The Studio in Newport. A number of top notch bands from around the Island took part after an online voting round beforehand, and the evening allowed the fans to listen to their favourites, together with some new up and coming talent on this wonderful Island.
The evening started with poll winners from the online voting, The Kurves.
The Kurves have only been around for a few months, some members originally from Wroxall. Jamie Fineran appears to be a talented songwriter and the band played some excellent Indie/Americana with the crowd soaking it up. They finished with Alabama Man, the track which gave them the top spot in the voting. Not a bad start to the evening and a very good standard to set for the others.
Second up were The Neurophobics, a Death Rock slash Punk band. The first thing that probably struck a number of punters was the mask donned by ‘Stench’, the lead guitarist. A few tracks later, the masked was changed for a more blood soaked version. Sadly, the band was missing a drummer, and for a Death Rock band, some would consider this unforgivable. It didn’t stop them giving a damn fine performance with ‘Addiction’ being my highlight. Find these guys a drummer now – if they haven’t got one already.
Goodbye Stereo (pictuered above) came up third, a very popular band given their following from the crowd and deservedly so. I’ve come across these guys on MySpace before and recognised a number of tunes in their set. Their Indie Pop sound lit up the room and the youngsters appeared to enjoy themselves. Some refreshingly good song writing and a cracking performance given by the group.
I’ve never seen The Shanklin Freak Show perform live before, but many of my friends have told me what a great performance they bestow upon their folk. I met Dr Dread before they went on, and he appeared to be a decent sport. I don’t think anyone could prepare me for what was to come next, but it was the most enjoyable performance of the evening. A great, unique show – I’ll make the effort to go and see them live again and I suggest you do the same. That is if you like that electro glam alternative stuff which of now I’m pretty much converted.
The final band Nerosis were up. By this time, I’d had more than my fair share of Cafferys but they managed to play some good tunes and the crowd certainly got involved. Maybe I wasn’t the only one drinking after all?!
Next came the results, The Shanklin Freak Show announced as the first band to go through. From that point I knew it was going to be tight. Goodbye Stereo played a good set and newcomers, The Kurves excelled in their spot. It was either one or the other and it was a bit tight to call. Goodbye Stereo deserved to get through to the next round, but I think the future is very bright for The Kurves. [Images reproduced with permission by The County Press]
