Many thanks to Roger for sending through this report from last week’s Making Waves. As he states that the bottom there are just two more of these events left this year. Ed
A night of colour, movement, and excellent sounds, well it is what we have come to expect from Shanklin Freak Show. The compare and DJ was “Jesus” (Mr Nick Painless), an excellent job done again. I can now say I bought “Jesus” a pint! Not sure it will save my soul.
Electro Magnetic Workshop stood in for Opal Room at the last minute and started the night with their excellent creative style.
Next was Joe Black (pictured below) from Portsmouth (first of two sets). Joe and his girls did another fantastically entertaining theatrical set.
Not only did the audience enjoy the music, we did find ourselves having a laugh as well. I bought my first of three CD’s that night and true to Joe Black, this was no ordinary CD or cover.
The CD cover was seven sheets of A5 card with sketches, cartoons and notes, all bound together with two pieces of green ribbon. The CD itself is more than enjoyable.
After “Jesus” kept us entertained once again, Global Citizen from London was up next. This band had a fantastic set which was excellently done, Industrial/Dark-wave/Goth/Moody style.
The second of three CD’s bought, an excellent CD which I keep playing.
Joe Black did his second of two sets which was as good as the first and thoroughly entertaining.
Then came the headline act Shanklin Freak Show. Playing through their set; with what have become normal for them, an exciting/adrenaline pumping full-on night.
Joined by mime artists, glitter, strobes, smoke machines, jugglers, fire-breathing, stilt-walkers, evil clowns. During the last number, all who wanted to join them on stage did, adding to the atmosphere.
Saul (Mr Strange) was selling his limited addition CD which I could not resist.
This is an excellent solo album, Industrial/Dark-wave/Moody and a touch of classic style. This CD is well worth buying if you get a chance. I also met some VentnorBlog readers who really showed what could be done with costumes. A great chat with other pic takers, including Julio Peculio’s Sister (who’s name I can’t remember (It’s an age thing)) and Sarah who dressed -up a treat and looked stunning.
Unfortunately, I managed to take pics of all the bands and some of the crowd but all the SFS pics seem to be lost. Maybe SFS put a mystical touch on them, so to stay inconspicuous until their World domination.
Don’t forget this Thursday 21st at the Venue will be Guy Page, Great Outdoors, Claydon Conor and Kelvin Cochrane.
Then Sep 4th will be Fatal, Hugo Frusslinky and The Chancers. This looks like it will be the last, so support these great Island bands and make a visit.
