Police are investigating the death of a man after a road traffic collision at Freshwater on the Isle of Wight.
Officers were called at 7.04pm last night (Friday, October 5, 2012) to reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a car in Copse Lane.
The pedestrian, a man aged in his 70s aged 82, was trapped under a white Ford Courier van. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The body was taken to hospital where an initial post-mortem examination is due to take place to help establish the exact cause of death.
Police are in the process of informing next-of-kin. The man’s name won’t be confirmed in the media until formal identification procedures are completed.
The driver of the Ford, a 75-year-old man from Freshwater, Isle of Wight, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He has been taken to Newport Police Station for questioning. The driver was shaken but not injured.
Copse Lane is closed to allow police to examine the collision scene for further evidence.
Investigating officer Sergeant Rob Heard of Hampshire Constabulary’s Road Death Investigation Team said:
“We are appealing to anyone who saw an elderly man walking in or near Copse Lane shortly before 7pm this evening. Any information about this man’s movements prior to the collision is important. I am equally keen to be contacted by witnesses who saw a white Ford Courier van being driven in the Freshwater area around the same time. Police are making enquiries into reports of other motorists using Copse Lane. I would urge these people to come forward and tell us what they saw. No other vehicles are believed to have been involved in the actual collision, but other motorists could prove to be crucial witnesses to the circumstances surrounding this death.”
