Former Independent MP, Martin Bell, will be kicking off his tour of the Isle of Wight this morning as he launches the Independent Group’s election campaign.
The former war reporter and UNICEF Ambassador will be visiting a number of projects on the Island where communities or local councils have stepped in to save a service due for the axe or similar.
West to South
He starts his tour at Dimbola Museum and Galleries, the former home of Victorian photographer, Julia Margaret Cameron that was saved by the local community.
He’ll then be heading along one of the finest stretches of the Island making his way to Ventnor Paddling Pool, which was taken on the Ventnor Town Council after the IWC cut maintenance funding.
North to East
Later in the day Mr Bell will visit the former Frank James Hospital, another project that has seen the community come together to tidy up the derelict site and encourage action by the owners.
Before heading to the Riverside Centre in Newport, Mr Bell will visit the successful Waterside Pool in Ryde, which as readers will know was taken over by a Community Trust after the council threatened to close it.
Central
Members of the public are invited to attend Mr Bell’s talk from 6pm at the Riverside Centre, Newport Quay.
He’ll be talking about Independent politics and taking part in a Q&A session.
