Mill Bay Tower Approved By Planning Committee

Ventnor dominated the beginning of the Planning Committee yesterday afternoon.

Mill Bay Tower Revised:As well as approving the development at the Ventnor Winter Gardens, they also considered the plans for the tower at the end of the Mill Bay development.

Readers will remember that the tower was rejected by committee members on previous applications due to the “bland and featureless elevational treatment, lack of detailing and proposed materials”.

The four story building was redesigned and committee members yesterday approved the new design.

If they continue to approve high rise buildings for the seafront, we will no longer be able to admire the beautiful terraces from the esplanade. Shame on the planning committee (I’d love to know if a Ventnor councillor was on it) for giving in, just because a bit of styling was changed. WHAT ABOUT THE HEIGHT????!!!! Approving another 4 story surely sets the precedent – which no… Read more »

Inevitable and predictable. I remember when loads of people protested outside the mill bay pub during the planning committee’s site visit years ago, people in the pub laughed them. Now we know why.

Mary, planning regulations stink. They have always favoured the developer. This is because when planning permision is refused, a reason must be given. The developer overcomes the reason by changing the plan so no further objection can be raised. Once the building is underway, they usually try to sneak in the original plan and hope no one notices. A friend’s neighbour put in an application to build… Read more »

To answer your question, Susan Scoccia is on the planning committee and she is also ward councillor for Ventnor West. I don’t know whether she took part last night.

Perhaps Susan will answer on here how she feels? Perhaps also, councillor Debbie Robinson, who led the campaign against developing the Mill Bay years ago has something to say? It’s absolutely shameful that when some of the public apathy is shaken and they take the time to object, and protest, they are laughed in their faces by the developers, architects, and the council. This beautiful “little’ seafront… Read more »

The Ventnor Town Council strongly opposed the application. How they vote seems to make no difference to the Planning Committee.

Check out the ‘conditional permission…’ link at the bottom of this story, bes. You’ll discover that this is one you can’t blame the ‘Ventnor local council’ for.

With apologies to Mary for repeating what she’d already said. :-$
Maybe it’s worth pointing out (again) though, that the Town Council and the County Council aren’t the same thing.

I absolutely agree with you. How is it that plans are turned down then with a minor ‘tweak’ for resubmission, are then approved! The height of the four-storey section remains the same. Council members should consider transparency of their votes as well as declare any conflicting interests. Any decisions should not appear to have any corruption associated with them.

Just like Napoleons Landing in Sandown – nice building, shame about the height.

All the profit in building is made on the first floor upwards. The more stories the more profit. And if nobody wants to live in them like no one wants to live in the Met it makes no difference – the loss is sent against profir made elsewhere so the developers don’t have to pay any tax. It doesn’t cost them out of their own pockets. What… Read more »

There is,of course, always the possibility of palms being greased. Not as I would even suggest any councillor on the Island would even contemplate such a despicable thing. I am sure all our councillors are as pure as the driven snow. I speak in hypothetical terms.
