The Hospice is instead asking people to hand over used postage stamps as an alternative way of raising much-needed funds to support patient care.
For the last four years, Islanders have saved up and brought in millions of plastic bottle tops, which have been sold to a recycling company. In all around five tons have been collected raising £286 for the Hospice.
But the bottle tops have to be stored, sent away for cleaning and then stored again to await collection. This is a time-consuming process that uses up a considerable amount of valuable storage space. Large amounts of bottle tops are also capable of attracting vermin.
Darren Button, Hospice retail area manager said,
“We are extremely grateful for all of those who have collected bottle tops over the past four years. Their efforts have been most appreciated as have the funds that have been raised.
“However, we have decided to switch our collection to postage stamps which are far easier to store and we hope will raise us more money. I hope all those who have supported us so well with the steady supply of bottle tops will continue to assist us by donating their used postage stamps.”
Darren said that stamps could be dropped into any of the Hospice’s nine stores, its distribution centres at Dodnor and Lake or the Hospice itself.
