Further to the report earlier about the Isle of Wight Council’s New Carbon Management Plan, School Transport Campaigner, Chris Whitehouse, has been in touch.
As regular VB readers will be aware, Chris has been campaigning to save free school transport to faith schools and for post 16 pupils.
He told VB, “Is the Council playing a sick joke at our children’s expense in publishing now an alleged commitment to reduce its carbon emissions?
“The Council Leadership is proposing to remove discretionary bus travel from every sixth former on the Island who currently qualifies for it, and are withdrawing concessionary bus travel from hundreds of pupils of faith schools.
“This will require hundreds of thousands of otherwise completely unnecessary car and motorcycle journeys every year, generating hundreds of tons of unnecessary carbon, leading to traffic congestion and more road traffic accidents.”
“I shall be submitting the Council’s environmental policies for next year’s Booker Prize for Fiction!”
