New Chairman and Vice-Chair For Isle of Wight Council

As we reported through Twitter and Facebook, the Isle of Wight council appointed a new chairman and vice-chair for the year 2011/12 last Wednesday evening.

David WilliamsDavid Williams, councillor for Shanklin Central, who has been vice-chair for the last year, was appointed Chairman of the council in front of other councillors and dignatories at the Annual meeting.

Cllr Williams said that it was going to be a tough year, but was looking forward to the Island hosting the NatWest Island games in just a few weeks time.

He went on to say that he’d thought the pinnacle of his career has been when he was Mayor of Shanklin in 2004, so was honoured to take on the role of Chairman of the Isle of Wight council. Former councillor, Jilly Wood, will be his consort for the year.

Cllr Williams chose the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and Barely Born as his two charities for the year, adding that his life was saved by the air ambulance crew, and was happy to be able to pay them back.

Vice-chair also appointed
As his position as vice-chair was now free, another councillor had to be nominated to take on the role.

Councillor for Ventnor West, Susan Scoccia was appointed vice-chair for 2011/12.

Susan ScocciaChoosing her husband, Felice as her consort, Cllr Scoccia explained that she’d originally been asked by Andrew Turner, MP to stand as ward councillor, but never imagined that she’s end up in the position of vice-chair of the council. Chair will have my support every step of the way representing our beautiful island.

Cllr Scoccia told VB, “I am truly honoured to be elected Vice Chairman of the Isle of Wight Council, and it will be a great pleasure working along side Cllr. David Williams, the new Chairman, supporting him in the many civic duties, and representing and promoting our wonderful Island”.
