The Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra open their new season on 19th November #with a programme that should appeal to all.
The concert, starting at 7.15pm at the Medina Theatre, features Elgar’s Enigma Variations as the main work.
Nimrod variation
The variations are a series of short pieces that describe some of Elgar’s friends, and includes the famous Nimrod variation.
Rare performance
The concert will open with a rare performance of the Overture “Yorrick” by English composer Geoffrey Bush.
The work written in 1949 is typical of the English light music industry and is full of good tunes.
The composer’s widow and grand daughter will be guests of honour at the concert.
Several soloists
To conclude the first half, the Orchestra will be joined by the Stankov ensemble for a performance of the Triple Concerto by Beethoven. This work features the violin, cello and piano as the solo instruments.
After the interval the Orchestra will perform an Overture by Mendelssohn entitled “Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage which includes a musical quote Elgar includes in his Enigma Variations which will conclude the concert.
