Newport Harbour Decision Deferred From Cabinet

Cabinet members were due to be considering issues surrounding Newport Harbour at tonight’s meeting.

Cllr David PughA statement from the leader of the council, Cllr David Pugh, has just been forwarded to all members stating that the item will now be deferred.

Since the papers were released last week, a number of people have made representations to the council calling into question the contents of Paper F (more to follow on this shortly).

Cllr Pugh said, “Since the publication of the Cabinet paper (Paper F) on the Newport Harbour Estate, a number of detailed representations have been made to the Council. Given the significance of some of the issues which have been raised, we feel it is important to consider these fully before any decision is made. Therefore we have decided to defer consideration of this paper until these matters have been looked at in detail.”

Will not be answering tabled public questions in detail
He went on to say, “We do not expect there to be departures from the subject matter of the paper, namely the extent of Newport Harbour Estate and a balanced view of existing leases. It is not about a future sale of the harbour for alternative uses. Nevertheless, we will seek to address the issues which have been raised in an updated version of the Cabinet report. This matter will return to Cabinet as soon as it reasonably possible, given it is essential that clarity is brought to these matters once and for all.

“As we will be considering these matters in full over the coming weeks, we will not be responding in detail, at this stage, to the public questions which have been tabled for the Cabinet meeting. Full responses will be provided in due course.”
