A recommendation to purchase derelict land in Newport for future housing has been approved by the deputy Leader and Cabinet member for Housing and Finance, Ian Stephens.
The purpose of the purchase of land on the corner of Pyle Street and East Street (just off Coppins Bridge), is to prepare it for redevelopment and then sell on for housing.
Enabling delivery of lower cost housing
Paperwork for the matter also states that it’s hoped that purchasing the site will enable the delivery of lower cost housing, which will be more accessible to young people, and in addition, 35 per cent will be ‘affordable housing’, to satisfy planning policy.
The council also say that redeveloping the site, and the long-term management and maintenance of the development, will create jobs, apprenticeships and training opportunities for the Island’s young people.
Condition of grant to clear the land
The authority was successful in securing £409,360 funding from the government to make the site suitable for redevelopment, which would include clearing, levelling and removing materials.
However, this is subject to the sale of the land to the IWC taking place by the end of March 2024.
