Thanks to Maxine for this latest from Newport Parish Council. Ed
At their October meeting, Newport Parish Council were delighted to welcome Samuel Hughes as a non-voting member of the parish council. Samuel is 15 and attends Christ the King College. He has been a member of the IW Youth Council for the past two years and is currently the representative for North Wight.
Increasing youth representation
Samuel said: “The reasons I wanted to join Newport Parish were purely to increase youth representation in my locality, North Wight, and to enable a greater communication between the Isle of Wight Youth Council and the Newport Parish Council.
“This, in conjunction with having the opportunity to offer up a ‘young persons’ perspective on matters arising, is why I now eagerly anticipate working with the council in the future.”
Important to involve young people
The Chairman, Cllr Peter Whiteman added, “It’s very important for Newport Parish Council that we get the youth involved and get their views about what happens in wards and around the town. And I am sure that Samuel will be an asset to our council and we look forward to seeing him at all our meetings.”
