The event was held in Lonsdale Ave, Parkhurst with Tansy’s Pantry supplying the refreshments. Mr Randini was also on hand to keep the children amused with Punch and Judy and balloon modelling.
Asked to rate importance of services
Residents were asked to fill in a questionnaire regarding the possible transfer of services from the Isle of Wight Council and were asked to rate the importance of services such as toilet provision, grass cutting in public areas, Environmental Officers and beach cleaning.
Over 85% felt all these services were either very important or important, although not all thought the parish council should be the provider.
Other views were also expressed about a 20mph limit around the town centre and the provision of extra dog waste bins.
Cllr Jane Perry, who had the original idea, said,
“What a pleasure it was to be able to go out, meet and talk to the residents of Parkhurst and hear their views, especially in the pouring rain, after weeks of dry weather.
“The idea of the project was to reach out to people who wouldn’t normally come to Parish Council meetings and to foster a sense of openness, inclusiveness and feeling of old fashioned community, where people got together and discussed their worries and concerns over a cuppa and a good bit of cake. I would also like to particularly thank one of the residents, Yvonne Yelland, for all her help with our leaflet drop.
“I am hoping this kind of event will be rolled out across other of our Newport wards so people can come to rely on it as an access point to the Parish Council.”
The Parish Council would like to thank the Ministry of Justice for allowing the use of the site and the Probation Service for clearing the foliage through the Community Payback scheme.
