The geotechnical works at Newport Road, Ventnor have been completed and the road linking upper and lower Ventnor has re-opened ahead of schedule.
Ventnor residents and businesses will be pleased to hear of the news, as many contacted OnTheWight with concerns the double-shifts and weekend work, mentioned by Island Roads at the start of the scheme, wasn’t taking place.
One business in the town said their sales were 50% down on the same period last year.
Has involved working extended hours
OnTheWight approached Island Roads about the level of cover at the works and they replied,
An Island Roads spokesperson said:
“Work to excavate, reconstruct and resurface Newport Road, at the section known as the Graben, has involved working extended hours to limit the disruption for local residents.
“This has included crews working double shifts which comprise teams on a day shift being joined by another crew working what’s known as a ‘backshift’ with overlapping hours to provide extra manpower as required.
“We have also occasionally worked longer hours depending on the type of work being progressed, but we have avoided night-time working to limit the noise for local residents.
“We have also worked on each Saturday, however work was cut short to half a day on one occasion due to the weather. We would like to sincerely thank local residents for their patience throughout the works.”
