Front page stories in the County Press this week include the news that naturists who have stripped off at Windy Corner in Niton for donkey’s years will be asked to cover up or move on by The National Trust.
Apparently, some bloke from Gunville who visited the beach recently with his family (*including his four year old daughter) felt intimidated when he noticed naked bodies basking in the sunshine.
He felt so offended that he complained to The National Trust and they will now be clamping down (ouch!).
He does go on to say that he has no objection to naturism, but feels it should be kept to designated areas.
If he lived right next to the beach, I’d say fair enough comment … but he lives in Gunville …. and has the entire island to choose from. Perhaps he doesn’t realise that naturists have been using that beach for many, many years.
What kind of society are we heading towards when one persons wishes can lead to the abolition of a long standing local tradition?
*In my experience, four year olds don’t really pay much attention to clothes and the wearing of. Generally, in the summer they themselves strip off at the first opportunity.
