Diane Goring was selected as one of twelve nurses nationally to undertake the Older Persons Nurse Fellowship at King’s College London funded by Health Education England.
The Older Persons Nurse fellowship, the first of its kind, is designed to produce a team of Nurses recognised in the field of specialist Older persons Nursing to lead and design services based around holistic care of older people both locally, nationally and internationally.
Commenting on her accreditation and what it means for the care of older persons on the Island, Diane said:
“To be selected as one of the first in the country to be awarded the King’s Older Persons Nurse Fellow title is an absolute honour. I am really looking forward to the challenge of ensuring that the Isle of Wight can start to lead the way in the care of our elderly population through redesigning services and integrating the care they receive.
“As nurses we can see that health can deteriorate as a person gets older and our patients can have illnesses that become life changing and debilitating. What I want people to recognise is frailty is an important indicator to longer term problems with a person’s health or social care needs. We need to recognise this, as an Island, to ensure that we can support our older generation to live well and ensure our services are designed around the needs of older people.”
Older Persons Nurse Fellow
As well as gaining accreditation as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner Diane recently attended the House of Lords where she was presented with the title of Older Persons Nurse Fellow by Sir Stephen Moss, NHS Medical Director and Baroness Greengross, Member of the House of Lords advocating Older persons rights.
Diane continued:
“The fellowship has allowed me to work with other nurses nationally that have the same passion for looking after older people as I do, we have shared best practice and participated in national conferences and as a fellowship we will continue to ensure that we keep the care of older people a priority within our own Healthcare Trusts.”
