Those who drive down to Ventnor Esplanande will be aware that a one-way restriction has been in place on Bath Road (the Western end of the seafront) since October 2013.
The restriction enforced by Island Roads has been advertised for the last seven months as completing by 19th May 2014.
However, in the last week the advertised restriction has changed. It now reads,
Bath Road. A one way restriction will be in operation from La Falaise car Park to Belgrave Road between 9am on Tuesday 29 October 2013 for the foreseeable future [our emphasis] due to the reduction in road for the protection to masonry at retaining wall R1074 above a property called Seacourt.
OnTheWight got in touch with Island Roads to find out why the completion has changed from a fixed date to an indefinite one.
Work to start in September 2014
A spokesperson on behalf of Island Roads told us,
“In October last year we published the required traffic regulation order to convert Bath Road, Ventnor to a one-way street to protect the safety of the public from a large section of wall which had become seriously unstable.
“We initially took out a six month order to allow us to assess and to hopefully undertake the work required, however the process to establish ownership of the wall and to design and seek technical approvals for the work is taking longer than anticipated.”
Work to start in September
They went on to say,
“Subject to these approvals, we would hope to begin the work in September 2014 and will aim to complete this as quickly as possible.
“In the meantime, in the interests of public safety we have renewed the required temporary traffic order maintaining the one way route until these works can be completed. We will return the road to a two-way arrangement as soon as it is safe to do so.”
