The Royal Victoria Yacht Club (RVYC) has been welcoming guests to its ‘Open Day for People with Disabilities’ since 1981, which was the first International Year of Disabled Persons.
This year’s event took place on Saturday 2nd July from 11am to 4pm. We had over 80 guests joining us and in total they took 230 individual boat trips, enjoyed a BBQ lunch, tea and cakes.
Variety of boats used
There were a variety of boats available for our disabled guests to enjoy trips along Wootton Creek and out into the Solent. Some ventured out on fast RIBS; Whitewash and Ballistic, while our wheelchair users were able to enjoy motor boating on Wet Wheels or sailing on Spirit of Scott Bader.
Sailing trips were also offered on two Drascombes and trimaran Mad Hatter while the club’s motor launch Victoria as well as Al Batross also offered more relaxed journeys, throughout the day.
Dore: It’s always a pleasure to witness participants having fun
Deputy Lord Lieutenant Mrs Mary Case DL, Bob Seely MP and Isle of Wight councillor, Ian Dore, joined us to spend time with our guests. Ian shared his thoughts,
“The RVYC Disability sailing day is special as it represents something truly wholesome. It’s about improving the lives of others.
“It’s always a pleasure to witness participants having fun, building confidence and to be offered such a fulfilling experience. Chatting with ‘George’ and his friends was an absolute blast, and they were relishing the opportunity of time spent with friends on the water. Such activities offer a myriad of positive benefits and all those that supported this day should be thoroughly applauded.
“My brother and I learnt to sail the RVYC with my parents assisting at Cadet Week, so the club has a lot of fond memories for me. Those that cast off recently are creating memories of their own and it’s fantastic to see. The Club, its volunteers and staff who dedicate time, resources, and effort into improving the lives of others deserve as much recognition as possible. Long may it continue.”
Over sixty RVYC members volunteered
Over sixty RVYC members volunteered, including our specialised boat crews, and we’d like to thank them for giving their time and boats free of charge, which allows our guests to have a wonderful day.
Lunch and refreshments were provided by our caterer: Catertemp. Club members provided home-made cakes for afternoon tea, and gifts for the tombola. Grace’s Bakery kindly donated buns and cakes and delicious Island ice creams were also served to guests.
