As was reported last week on VB, last Saturday afternoon in Ventnor saw a large mosaic of Hygeia, goddess of health and symbol of Ventnor being unveiled.
It was created by students from the mosaic course along which was run by Helen Goodman, just one of the courses supported by the Neighbourhood Learning in Ventnor project, which is organised by the Arts Unit of the Isle of Wight Council and funded by the Learning and Skills Council. Phew! That’s a mouthful.
Many thanks go out to Topps Tiles of Newport who kindly donated the tiles used to make the mosaic.
Twelve local people worked on it over a period of thirteen weeks and it is now installed in position on the bandstand at Ventnor Esplanade.
Last Saturday, 6th October, it was officially “opened” by Susan Scoccia in her position as mayor of Ventnor. Over 100 people attended, with refreshments provided by the group as well as some Hygeia beer provided by Ventnor Brewery.
Ventnor Guitar Club were there and gave an hour of music and entertainment, enjoyed by all.
If you have not viewed it yet, then make a point of going to see it on your next trip to Ventnor Esplanade – it makes a lovely addition to the seafront.
If you are interested in mosaic making yourself, then call the Arts Unit on 823826 and put your name down for future courses.
