Night-time road closures at Coppins Bridge have been lifted following the completion of a major resurfacing scheme.
The project by Island Roads at the Island’s busiest junction has also seen road markings repainted and the parapet railing upgraded. All work has been undertaken at night time – and at the later start time of 10pm – in order to reduce inconvenience.
In all, approximately 1,400 tonnes of material has been planed out during eleven nights of works and replaced with the corresponding 9,000 square metres of surfacing materials.
Other work takes place during lane closures
There remains some anti-skid resurfacing to be laid but this will be done using lane closures – hopefully in two shifts in the coming weeks depending on the weather – and again at night-time so this should have little impact on road users.
Island Roads construction manager Keith Gourlay said:
“There has also been a lot of work around Coppins Bridge this year including on Medina Way, the Link Road and South Street so we really would like to thank road users, residents and local businesses who have been really supportive.
“It is impossible to do this sort of town centre work without causing some disruption but we hope that through the various steps we have taken, such as working later than normal, we have kept any inconvenience to an absolute minimum.
“We also hope that road users – and there are in the region of 50,000 vehicle movements on Coppins Bridge each day – will now notice a much smoother journey and residents adjacent to the junction will notice the surface is much quieter.”
In addition this year, structural work was also undertaken to strengthen Coppins Bridge itself.
