What colour means a great night out? Blue of course. A great Blues night, well, Amen Promotions did arrange it.
The setting was arranged with candle lit cabaret style tables towards the front, with further seating to the back. A good mix of tables/chairs and dance floor. Another nice touch was during the interval, trays of ice-cream were on offer, this took me back a few years!
First up was DAMIEN PAUL AND STUART WOODLEY a double bass and acoustic Blues style; songs included MUDDY WATERS ‘Can’t Be Satisfied’ and ROBERT JOHNSONS ‘Walking Blues’.
The band was appreciated and a good opener for THE AMEN BOOGIE BLUES BAND who performed their crowd pleasing Chicago Blues.
With dancers already up on the floor THE AMEN BOOGIE BLUES BAND opened with THE BLUES BAND ‘Green Stuff’ running through to SON HOUSE ‘Death Letter’.
By now, the appreciative crowd waited for what turned out to be a fantastic night of Blues from the International Delta Blues man PAPA GEORGE.
PAPA GEORGE opened with ‘Black Jack’ from his CD “Down At The Station”. He went through a wide range of songs with the Delta Blues on his steel guitar.
Other songs included ‘Honky Tonk Woman’ ‘Rollin And Tumblin’ and finishing with FLEETWOOD MACS ‘Oh Well’ which included probably the best drum solo I have heard for years.
PAPA GEORGE obviously enjoyed himself, as he left it very tight to leave the gig to get the boat home. Thank you to all the bands and to Amen Promotions for putting on this fine blues night.
A big thank you to the Winter Gardens; it is well run with their group of enthusiastic and friendly volunteers. The sound was superb and was provided by Keith Pearson – loud enough but not too loud, well done all.
