Thanks to Jo for sending through the report from Saturday’s parkrun No13. In her own words. Ed
Hurray! We have a new course record and many new Personal Bests (PBs) following Saturday’s dynamic performances on this deliciously cool but still morning. 57 official runners took part today – our best ever number of participants – including 18 first-timers.
The race director today was the indomitable Ray Scovell with the assistance of Elaine Tracey (nice to have you back Elaine), and many thanks to all the volunteers, marshalls and timers who helped to manage the event with Ray this week – especially those who came early to help set up the course. We really couldn’t operate without you, and are so grateful for your help and enthusiasm.
Don’t forget your barcodes
Our only problem this week was a repeat of last week’s debacle with non-bar-coded runners still crossing the finishing line. We must urge all runners to PLEASE bring your bar-codes with you – it really is all you need to remember.
Being registered isn’t enough, and giving us your details at the end will not help because the timings are loaded automatically to parkrun through the scanner. We need your bar-code to give you a time and position on the results table, and to ensure that everyone finishing after you is allotted their correct time and position.
Right, enough finger-wagging and remonstrations, now to the exciting bits!
Our winner this week, in his first ever appearance at parkrun, was William Newnham (JM15-19), of the Aldershot, Farnham & District AC, in an amazing time – and new course record – of 16:31. Just like Aaron last week, Will started very strongly and there was no doubt who the winner was going to be from the start!
In second place (for the first time in his 3 appearances at parkrun), and just seconds off his own PB, was Les Cupis of the Ryde Harriers in 19:31. IW parkrun first-timer – Graham Taylor (VM40-44) – was third today (in his third ever parkrun!) in 20:03.
Ten consecutive wins for Crumplin
It gives me great pleasure to state that in her 13th consecutive appearance at the Isle of Wight parkrun, our female winner today – for the 10th week running – was 11 year old Eden Crumplin (JW14) of the IW Athletics Club, in a time of 22:28.
This was only seconds off Eden’s overall PB, and one her best runs for months, so very well done Eden. Watching this petite sprite keeping up effortlessly with the tall, long-limbed club runners is a joy to behold every week!
We were also thrilled to have fellow IWAC member Kaya Simpson (JW14) running again today, and she finished (not for the first time) in a close second to Eden in a time of 22:56 – which is also her new PB. Congratulations Kaya.
Our third lady today was first-timer and IW Road Runner Clare Jones (SW30-34) in 24:36. These were all excellent performances, and the smile on Clare’s face at the end said it all really!
Overall scores
Our first and second place men today both earned good scores on the age graded performance table; Will Newnham was graded at 79.42% and Les Cupis 74.38%. Eden always brings in a good age graded score too, and this week was graded at 74.04%. Leading the board overall though is still Graham Tuck with his impressive grading of 85.21% from our second event on 14th May.
In the male points table Jay Tuck will be thrilled to know that he is still ahead – despite being unable to participate today for the first time since IW parkrun started – with an excellent 1,075 points. Alan Rowe is still second with 989 points, and Jacob Lewis is still in close third with 971.
In the female points table, Eden Crumplin is still way ahead with her incredible 1,296 points, with Katie Patricia Lewis reaching her millennium with 1,010 points to be in second place, and young Elsie Lewis remaining in third place with 944 points.
Today saw a satisfying 20 new personal bests, which brings the total number of PBs since the Medina IW parkrun started to 128. During these 13 weeks we have seen 168 different runners – representing a total of 21 different clubs – running the equivalent of 468 parkruns and covering a total distance of 2,340 kms!
I’m delighted to say that the overall male course record holder is now Will Newnham with his phenomenal 16:36 time today, and the overall female course record holder is still Claire Kiely, who achieved 20:56 at our very first event on 7th May.

If you want to volunteer to help at one of the events, simply phone Ray or go to the “volunteer” tab on the Medina IW parkrun website, and let us know on which date you will be able to help.
We are still in need of people to help set up the event in dates throughout August whilst Ray takes a well-earned break. If you think you can help do please let us know in good time. Many thanks to all the stalwart volunteers who have made IW parkrun possible so far.
See you again soon!
