Regular VB readers will remember that back in July, the Isle of Wight council voted to close Shanklin Fire Station.
The decision, as part of the Fire Service Modernisation programme, was made to close the fire station prior to the promised Bay Area station being built and put into service.
6,000 strong petition calls for delay in closure
This news caused great concern for many people living in Shanklin, so local businessman, Steve Marsh, started a petition calling for the delay to the closure of Shanklin Fire station.
The community have supported the petition in their droves and it has now gathered a whopping 6,000 signatures.
Later today (2pm) the petition will be presented to Councillor Abraham at Shanklin Fire Station.
If you wish to show your support for the delay in closure of the fire station, organisers are asking that members of the community attend the presentation of the petition from 1.45pm.
Full details of the recommendations voted upon at the July council meeting can be found in the Cabinet paper (PDF). This details the cost implications of retaining the fire service at Shanklin.
